RSFS Annual Lecture 2016
This year’s RSFS Annual Lecture was given by Sir John Lister-Kaye OBE on Wednesday 13th April at Edinburgh Academy.
Sir John is one of Scotland’s best-known naturalists and conservationists, a Times columnist and author. He has lectured and led expeditions on wildlife and conservation in many countries. In 1986 he won the WWF’s gold award for environmental education; has received honorary doctorates from St Andrew’s and Stirling Universities and in 2003 received an OBE for services to nature conservation. He lives at Aigas, near Beauly, where he is founder/director of the internationally acclaimed Aigas Field Centre.
The title of the lecture was “A Living Forest” and he presented, in great detail, the environmental advantages of natural woodland as opposed to “commercial forestry” using his local Aigas Forest as an example. He felt that government should be making more efforts in this direction. An interesting Q&A session followed and the general feeling was that a suitable compromise between commercial and environmental issues should always be sought.
The evening was attended by a good group from across all forestry sectors and was greatly enjoyed by all.
The Society gratefully acknowledges the kind support of the Scottish Forestry Trust for this event.
