The FAO has published photos from around the world for the International Day of Forests. The photographer said of this image: 'This woman carrying wood on her head provides the domestic energy that allows food to be cooked and harvests to be processed. Her dignified posture reveals that prosperity is not only material: it is also found in a respectful balance with nature.'

Tilhill has been trialling an automated planting machine. The PlantMax, made by Swedish company Plantma Forestry, could, the company said, 'aid manual, more labour-intensive planting' in some conditions.

The European Space Agency has published images taken by its Biomass satellite. This image, captured over Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo, shows winding ribbons of gallery forests tracing the tributaries of the Congo River, Kasai River and Kwango River basins.
