Hosted by Forest Research and RSFS, this training Hosted by Forest Research and RSFS, this training day offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of forest pests and diseases that impact our woodland ecosystems. As climate change and global trade increase, recognising threats to tree health have never been more important for forestry professionals.

The day combines expert presentations with hands-on learning experiences. In the morning, Forest Research pathologists and entomologists will deliver informative talks covering the identification and biology of a range of current threats, accompanied by a deeper dive into several case studies. The afternoon will feature indoor and outdoor practical sessions where participants will get experience with some of the fundamental field-based and lab-based methods used to identify and assess pests and pathogens, and think about resultant biosecurity issues.

An animation produced by the Royal Forestry Societ An animation produced by the Royal Forestry Society with funding from the Forestry Commission sheds light on the experience of tree workers when the public respond negatively to essential forestry work.
The video aims to show why felling trees is necessary for managing habitats, keeping public spaces safe and producing sustainable materials, and why an angry response to local forestry workers doesn't help them or the trees they manage.

Book now for the RSFS and @forestresearchuk event Book now for the RSFS and @forestresearchuk event on Planning for Climate Change. Taking place on 27 July at Roslin, Midlothian, 10-4pm.

This training day offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of how to plan for climate change.

Led by research experts, the morning will consist of an overview of the six climate risks (flooding, pest and diseases, wildfire, frost, with a deep dive into drought and windthrow). Participants will be able to learn about the latest research as well as engage in discussions to exchange experiences and knowledge.

In the afternoon we will explore resources for resilience, based around the new Climate Change Hub, and participants will be able to work on the creation of a priority action plan.

Whether you work in woodland management, conservation, or arboriculture, this workshop will enhance your ability to take mitigating actions to counter the increasing risks from climate change.

The host is: Gail Atkinson from Forest Research.

Did you know that as an RSFS member you are entitl Did you know that as an RSFS member you are entitled to apply for grant support to help plant trees which increase the resilience of our woodlands and forests?

The Royal Scottish Forestry Society (RSFS), Royal Forestry Society (RFS), Train Hugger and GreenTheUK have teamed up to help plant trees that will survive and thrive.

Through funding raised from rail users and businesses, Train Hugger and GreenTheUK are offering grants of 50p per tree to help RSFS and RFS members plant trees with long-term impact.

Grants can be used for woodland creation, restocking, underplanting, enrichment planting, urban and parkland projects, hedges, shelterbelts and resilient landscape schemes such as flood prevention or storm protection. Projects should focus on planting the right trees in the right places, with clear plans for care and establishment. Funding can also support innovation, new species and mixes, and increased species and structural diversity.

Applicants must be RSFS members.
