Be counted – take part in the Forestry Workforce C Be counted – take part in the Forestry Workforce Census

Forest Research, on behalf of the Forestry Commission, Scottish Forestry, and Welsh Government, is launching the Forestry Workforce Census. It aims to better understand what the forestry operations workforce in Great Britain looks like today.

The Census will capture the size of the workforce and the scale of forestry operations taking place, providing vital evidence to support the future of the sector.

Organisations across the forestry sector in Great Britain are being asked to submit information about their workforce on two separate dates to account for roles that are seasonal – 1 October 2026 and 1 March 2027.

Booking is now open for our Brahan Estate field da Booking is now open for our Brahan Estate field day on 28 August! Brahan Estate has a rich history of forestry and agriculture and is the traditional seat of the Clan Mackenzie. Now owned and run by the Matheson family the estate is a good example of a sustainable highland enterprise, which is carefully managed to produce high value produce, from agriculture and forestry, as well as embracing renewables and hospitality.

Guests will be met by Iain Nesbit who has been the forester on Brahan for over 25 years and Steven Liddle who has been the Forestry advisor since 2012. The estate is FSC certified and is run as a commercial woodland alongside management of the designated features and the Designed Landscape around the farm.

After an introduction to the estate guests will get a tour of Continuous Cover Forestry sites and traditional forestry restocking sites to see what has worked and what could be done better!

This event is open to all, and tickets can be reserved via the RSFS website: https://rsfs.org.uk/event/brahan-estate-forestry-visit/

We have just published Scottish Forestry journal V We have just published Scottish Forestry journal Volume 80 No2 - members can read the digital edition right away, while hard copies should arrive in the coming fortnight.

This Summer 2026 edition, with its colourful cover by RSFS member Eleanor Harris depicting a woodland creation site in the Borders, carries two pairs of articles on pivotal subjects for forestry. First, the Scottish Land Commission and Scottish Land & Estates give their analyses of how recent land reform legislation will affect the sector. We also platform two proposals for how deer control could be managed better for woodland health. With our main scientific article on the properties of tree species mooted for future use we are also publishing a plain-English summary of the key points for forestry practitioners. As well as a full report from the RSFS Annual Study Tour, some astonishing ancient oaks, book reviews and regional field visits, we can report strange goings-on in Crofthead Forest involving microscopes, bacterial art and fungi wired up to synthesisers...

To read the digital edition, members should log in to the RSFS website and go to https://rsfs.org.uk/journal/
Non-members can buy a single copy in the shop (https://rsfs.org.uk/shop/) - or join the society to receive the journal three times each year alongside a raft of other membership benefits.
